Do you wish to enhance the beauty of your land and also save the environment? Well, you should consider tree planting.

Planting trees not only helps to enhance the greenery in your area, but it also conserves the environment, climate, and soil.

This article discusses planting, its process and its benefits.

Keep reading to know how planting trees today can change your future.

tree planting importance

What is Tree Planting?

Tree plantation is planting tree seedlings either for organic landscaping or forestry.

It is also known as reforestation and afforestation.

If it has been forested recently then it is considered reforestation and if it has never been forested it is called afforestation.

Hence, reforestation is the regrowth of a previously deforested land and afforestation is a plantation on empty land.

Therefore, it is done on lands previously caught by fire, damaged by harvesting or human activity.

Planting methods can differ across countries and lands.

Though planting trees and reforestation can help restore the forest to some extent, they cannot regain the natural forest biodiversity completely.

However, it is still vital to the growth of trees and plantations in a deforested area.

Tree planting is essentially planting a tree seedling or sampling permanently in land for it to grow and be a part of new land or forest.

This process is done because trees are of great benefit to the environment and humans.

Let’s learn more about that below.

tree planting benefits

Tree Planting Benefits

The benefits and advantages of trees go far beyond aesthetics and beauty.

Planting trees not only provide environmental and aesthetic benefits but it also helps humans economically and socially.

You may have heard about trees absorbing Carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen but do you know that they also impact your psychological and mental wellbeing?

Well if you did not, then keep reading to know the benefits of trees and the purpose of planting trees.

Environmental Benefits

This is a no-brainer.

Trees can reduce carbon dioxide in the morning and release oxygen.

They remove and store carbon dioxide to only release it back in the night.

Therefore, humans make use of the oxygen released in the environment.

They help to control the wind speeds as well as reduce heat by evaporative cooling and deflect heat from sunlight upwards reducing the amount that reaches the ground.

This reduces our exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays.

Moreover, this reduces temperatures up to 7 degrees Celcius in places such as parking lots or buildings but also the overall temperature of that entire place.

Therefore, they are essential to control global warming, increased temperatures and climate change.

Trees not only reduce the carbon dioxide in the air we breathe but also enhance air quality by reducing pollutants.

These include carbon monoxide, ozone and sulfur dioxide dust particles and pollutants.

Also tress control flooding and soil erosion.

They are known to absorb stormwater which controls flooding and pollution as well as keeps the soil and land fertile.

Moreover, trees are a habitat of many wildlife mammals and birds.

They provide shelter and food in the form of fruits, to these species and it will help conserve nature as much as deforestation destroys it.

relaxing in nature

Social Importance

You can feel relaxed and de-stress in the presence of nature and greenery.

Planting trees and an abundance of trees around you can lower your stress levels and can improve your mental wellbeing.

In fact, patients recover faster in hospitals if they have a view of the outdoors with trees and greenery and children retain better if they are given time to play outdoors in greenery.

Humans eventually are social animals so not only do we need our community but we also need nature.

Therefore, trees will not only help one individual but will be beneficial to your entire community.

A tree in your home can also benefit your neighbors but a land forested with trees will help the entire community.

Moreover, trees planted across streets help to move the traffic calmly and safely.

They can also reduce and filter noise and scenic disturbances.

And as we know, trees complement well with buildings, houses and provide a calm feeling that is also aesthetically pleasing.

Economic Purpose

If trees bear fruits then you can sell and export these fruits to other countries as well.

Moreover, trees around your home can provide a cooling effect and shading hence reducing the need of cooling appliances and saving costs.

Also deciduous trees can work the opposite. They will allow the sun’s heat to provide you warmth in winters.

In fact, they can also become windbreakers in winters and reduce the effect of the cooling winds.

And a well-maintained house with trees and greenery will have a higher market value than those without it.

Though essentially as trees bear fruit, reduce floods, prevent global warming, they protect the economy from harm and disaster.

process

The Tree Planting Process

Due to rising global warming and climate change threats, some countries have already begun their tree plantation drives.

These drives aim at the reforestation and afforestation of several trees and forests around the country.

However, you do not need to restrict planting trees to empty fertile land.

You can also plant a tree in your house or a nearby park.

You first need to get a tree seedling or sampling from your nearby nursery and play your part in making the air cleaner and saving the environment.

Then you should be familiar with the underground utilities before digging.

Moreover, keep your tools handy. You may need a round-point shovel to dig the hole and a flat one to fill it with dirt.

Once, you are set, you can start planting.

  • A part of the trunk expands at the tree’s base. This is called the trunk fare and is kept visible on the ground.
  • Dig a hole using your round point shovel. The hole should be wide and shallow.
  • Next, remove any container and straighten any root balls. Cut or remove circled roots if they can’t be straightened.
  • Take special care about the depth of the tree. Don’t plant it too deep as it will deprive the roots of oxygen and that will hinder the growth of the tree.
  • You must ensure that the tree is straight. Ask someone else to look at it too from different angles.
  • Start filling the hole delicately with a flat shovel.
  • Fill some soil around the root balls for stabilization. Cover all the holes so that there are no air pockets.
  • Keep watering it when backfilling.
  • Do not apply plant fertilizer at the time of plantation.
  • You can also mulch the tree to provide protection from weeds and retain moisture.
  • You should follow up by watering the trees once a week. Do so especially in warm temperatures when there is not enough rain. Don’t forget to water them in windy, hot weather but do not waterlog it.

tree planting considerations

Plantation Considerations

Planting usually takes place in a dormant season.

This is after leaves fall in autumn or before bud break in spring.

This cool weather condition establishes the root system and root growth in the plant. Followed by rains in spring and the heat in summers that allows the top growth of the plant.

However, there are some plant species that you can plant throughout the year.

Burlapped or container trees can grow well in the growing season and tropical areas can have good growth the entire year.

Weather conditions, type of plant and adequate care can determine the growth of the tree.

Ideally, young trees may take up to 20 to 30 years to grow fully.

Topical areas with adequate water and a good warm climate can grow a fully grown tree in 30 years.

A tree is also an investment. Growing it now can benefit the next several generations.

types

Types of Trees

There are over 100 types of tree species.

However, these can be broadly divided into two categories.

Deciduous

These trees change color and shed leaves at fall time. Therefore, they change color in autumn and fall off so they are completely bare in winters.

However, they do bear new leaves as soon as spring comes after a few months.

This happens because there is less sunlight for photosynthesis during winters.

Hence, they enter a dormant phase where they are not dead but just do not grow leaves and put any energy outside.

They have broad, flat and delicate leaves.

Evergreen

This type of tree will remain green throughout the year.

However, some of them may shed leaves it is not because of the season but any other natural and environmental factor.

Evergreen trees have usually thin, needles and cones types of leaves.

Most of these are conifers that do not have flat but needle-shaped leaves.

You must be wondering…

how does this help in planting?

Well, the answer is simple.

If you are looking for planting trees, you must know about the types of trees you wish to plant.

If you want to have greenery all around the year then you should opt for evergreen trees or a mixture of evergreen and deciduous trees.

Deciduous trees can provide shade and coolness in hot summers and sunlight warmth in cold winters.

Therefore, this can also save you cooling and heating costs in your house.

Conclusion

Planting trees is extremely beneficial to humans and the environment.

Every living being on this planet benefits from trees and their importance, significance and need has only grown in years.

Planting a tree today will benefit our future generations and also us.

Excessive reforestation and afforestation is the need of time as the world is approaching rapid climate changes that can destruct life on this planet.

Tree planting is the need of time and should be a regular process for all generations.
