Root rot and Fusarium wilt are soil-borne fungal diseases that make plants wilt, yellow and collapse even when the soil is wet — the roots are rotting, not thirsty. Signs of root rot and Fusarium wilt
- Plant wilts during the day even though the soil is moist
- Lower leaves yellow first, then the whole plant
- Roots are brown or black and soft — healthy roots are white and firm
- Brown, soft rot at the base of the stem
- Sudden collapse of a plant that looked healthy days before
- Fusarium-specific: yellowing and wilting starts on ONE side of the plant, and a cut stem shows brown streaks inside (vascular browning)
Note: these above-ground symptoms look almost identical to nutrient deficiency and nematode damage — always pull one plant and check the roots and stem base before treating.
Why these diseases are so common in the UAE
High temperatures, overwatering of sandy soils, saline irrigation water that weakens roots, and poor drainage in pots and greenhouses create perfect conditions for soil fungi. Once established, fungi like Fusarium survive in the soil for years — which is why treatment must target the soil, not just the plant.
Organic treatment program
- Confirm the diagnosis. Pull one affected plant: brown soft roots, stem-base rot, or brown streaks inside the stem confirm fungal disease.
- Treat with Magic. Soak about 100 g of Magic in 20 liters of water, stir, let it stand 2.5 hours, then spray the whole plant or drench the root zone — twice a week. Direct method: apply the powder around the main stem and water in (large trees 100 g, medium trees 50–75 g, small trees 25 g, vegetables 5–10 g). Magic has no pre-harvest safety period, even when used as a fungicide.
- Stop the cause. Reduce watering, improve drainage, and keep mulch away from the stem. Fungal root diseases thrive in constantly wet soil.
- Rebuild the soil. After the plant recovers, apply Saprosoil and Eco-Premium to restore organic matter and beneficial soil biology that naturally suppress pathogen fungi.
- For new planting: pre-treat the soil with Magic (5 g per planting hole) instead of chemical fungicides, and never replant the same species into untreated soil where plants died of wilt.
